Who we are
The CIMAC WG22 ‘Radiated Noise’ has been founded to enhance compliance by ensuring industry adherence to IMO guidelines on URN reduction. It aims to promote best practices by sharing and implementing noise reduction strategies in commercial shipping. The group will innovate solutions by encouraging the development and adoption of new technologies to minimize URN. Additionally, it seeks to raise awareness about the impact of URN on marine ecosystems and influence policy by advocating for supportive regulations at both national and international levels. CIMAC WG 22 represents stakeholders from
- Engine and equipment manufacturers
- Users: owners and operators
- Classification societies
- Research institutes and technical consultants
Aim and Scope
Aim and scope of Working Group 22:
- Address Underwater Radiated Noise (URN): Focus on the impact of URN from commercial shipping on marine life, particularly marine mammals.
- Develop Mitigation Strategies: Formulate and promote strategies to reduce URN in compliance with IMO guidelines.
- Collaborate with Stakeholders: Engage with shipbuilders, operators, regulatory bodies, and environmental organizations.
- Monitor and Report: Track the effectiveness of implemented strategies and report findings to the industry association.
- Aligning Energy Efficiency Measures with URN Reduction: Ensure that energy efficiency initiatives also contribute to reducing URN, and Energy Efficiency does not decrease with URN Reduction.
- Improving Prediction vs. Measurement Models: Enhance the accuracy of models predicting URN compared to actual measurements.
- Optimizing Propulsion Configurations: Develop and implement propulsion systems that minimize URN while maintaining efficiency
- Expand Scope: Potentially include noise pollution from power generation and train drives in future phases.
