In early December, the Maritime Safety Committee met at the International Maritime Organization headquarters in London for its 109th session. These topics were on the agenda:
- Goal-based new ship construction standards
- Development of a Code to regulate autonomous ships (Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships - MASS)
- Development of a safety regulatory framework to support the reduction of GHG emissions from ships using new technologies and alternative fuels (GHG safety)
- Cyber risk management
- Measures to enhance maritime security
- Piracy and armed robbery updates
- Reports from the Sub-Committees
On behalf of CIMAC, Eero Lehtovaara, CIMAC Board Member and Vice-President Digitalization, as well as Daniel Erdmann took part. They familiarized themselves with the procedures at the IMO, and they started to establish contacts with delegates from member states, NGOs and IGOs. There were several topics of particular interest to CIMAC on the agenda, be it the ship construction standards, MASS, or pollution prevention. CIMAC will be happy to contribute in the future and to support IMO decision making with the expertise of its members.
